SEVEN

As soon as the door opened, Asa got out of his seat and moved so he had his back to the driver, allowing me to sit where he’d been, facing front. It was actually very thoughtful, because he knew I’d never be comfortable with my back to them.

Looking at Asa, so relieved to be in the car and not on the porch with Morgan, it took me a second to realize that he looked terrible. In a heavy button-up cardigan, sweats, and a t-shirt, hair sticking up, with bags under his eyes.

“What’s going on?” Asa groused at me.

“Nothing, why? What do you think is going on?”

“I have no fuckin’ clue, but Morgan looked even more murderous than usual—no pun intended—and you look frantic.”

“No pun intended?”

He waved me off as though I were the tedious one and not him.

“So what was so important that you had to come over here?”

“First,” he said, taking a breath, pointing over his shoulder, “that’s Tucker driving and Wiley riding shotgun.”

Both were handsome, Tucker in that “quick smile and dimples” way, crisp, polished, suit jacket and no tie. Wiley appeared more laid-back, sporting a black leather shearling-lined bomber jacket with a crewneck sweater underneath. He was darker, with brown eyes and brown hair, and he was the one glancing around, checking for threats.

When I leaned sideways to look at Tucker, I found him gazing back at me in the rearview mirror. What was surprising was the slight smile. Sitting back up straight, I found Wiley turned in his seat to meet my stare. The head tip was friendly as well and that, too, was weird. When my eyes flicked back to Asa, he winced.

“Admiring your handiwork from yesterday?”

“I…overreacted.”

I nodded. That was one way to put it. Battery was another.

“My father was not thrilled, so I have babysitters from now on.”

Wiley cleared his throat, and Asa gave me a half squint of irritation. He was clearly over these guys already. “I wouldn’t characterize us as babysitters, Mr. Masters. We’re more—”

“I need you to get out for a few minutes,” Asa announced sharply.

“It’s fifteen degrees out,” Wiley told him.

“I don’t give a shit.” He was adamant. “I have to speak privately to Hart.”

“You can go in his house,” Tucker told him.

“Is there more than just you and Morgan in there?” Asa asked me.

“Actually yes,” I told him. “I’m having a dinner party. But they could go in.”

Asa narrowed his eyes.

“What?” I said, annoyed. “Who cares? I was trying to get Morgan hooked up, but something’s off with him, so it’s probably not going to work, and my date will wait no matter what, so—”

Asa blew a raspberry. “Your date will wait no matter what? Shit, Hart, that’s hard-core conceit right there.”

“He wants to get laid,” I assured him. “He’ll wait.”

“I’d wait,” Tucker told me, and that time when my eyes met his in the rearview mirror, I saw a smile there that held more than a bit of interest.

It had been years since anyone had looked twice at
